Unexplained. An analysis in ξ-ου-θός with connection with the German. word for `grey(brown)', e.g. OE hasu (IE *ḱasu̯o-), to which also Lat. cānus (s. ξανθός), makes resticted claims. -- The general similarity with ξανθός has long ago been observed (e.g. Curtius 522).
